Manchester United to make move for Sadio Mane in January - sources

Manchester United are planning a new move for Southampton star Sadio Mane in January, sources have told ESPN FC.

Mane has been a long-term target for United, with the Senegal attacker strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford at the end of the summer transfer window, but a move failed to materialise.

The 23-year-old has caught the eye at Southampton since arriving in the summer of 2014 from Red Bull Salzburg and he has quickly established himself as one of the best forwards in the Premier League.

Mane scored 10 Premier League goals in 26 games last season and he has already netted six goals in all competitions this term, including getting on the mark against Chelsea and Liverpool.

Chelsea are the latest club to be linked with Mane and the reported interest from Stamford Bridge is set to force United to step up their attempts to land Mane when the transfer window reopens in January.

Southampton are keen to keep hold of Mane and are looking to tie down the player to a an improved deal at the club to ward off interest from rival clubs, but United appear to be ready to test their resolve in the New Year.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted he is looking to bring in some wingers to bolster to his squad and Mane would fit the bill in adding pace, creativity and goals to the Dutchman's side.
