Louis van Gaal delighted with Manchester United spirit at Watford

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said he was "amazed" by the spirit of his team after an injury-time goal gave them a 2-1 win at Watford and took them back to the top of the Premier League.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's low cross was diverted into his own net by Watford striker Troy Deeney, who had brought his side level at 1-1 from the penalty spot minutes earlier.

Memphis Depay put United in front after 11 minutes, but Watford responded strongly after the break and enjoyed plenty of pressure.

Van Gaal told BT Sport: "I was amazed by the spirit in our team. I'm very proud that I am the manager of the team.

"Of course we are fighting for the first position in the league. We are closer every week, but the end is the most important."

He praised Depay, who played as a striker in the absence of the ill Wayne Rooney, saying: "In the first half he was superb. I think the role is the best role for him -- I knew he could do this."

The United boss said Rooney could be back for the match against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League next week, and Anthony Martial, who suffered a knock to his foot while playing for France, could also return.

Midfielder Schweinsteiger told BT Sport: "In football, you always have 90 to 93 minutes. You always have to believe. There was a bit of luck, but we are happy to get the three points.

"You have to sniff a little bit of danger, the angle was not so easy -- but of course he [Deeney] touched the ball.

"The three points were very important for us. Next match we play Leicester. That's difficult, but if we win that too then we are happy in the Premier League."

He said goalkeeper David De Gea, who made two outstanding saves, was "one of the best in the world" and added: "You need a good goalkeeper when you want to win something."
