Anthony Martial spirit praised by Schneiderlin after United own goal

Morgan Schneiderlin has praised Anthony Martial for the show of character he produced in Manchester United's 1-1 draw against CSKA Moscow.

Martial was labelled "stupid" by manager Louis van Gaal for conceding the first-half penalty that led to CSKA's goal.

But the £36 million forward responded to earn United a point by heading in his fifth goal since his summer move from Monaco.

And teammate Schneiderlin told reporters: "He didn't let his head down because the penalty can happen to anyone and then he scored a great goal. After that we pushed on."

The midfielder, who is a France teammate of Martial's, revealed United had a game plan based on keeping the ball in Moscow.

He said: "That was one of the key points. We kept the ball, made them run a lot and then we had some chances in the second half.

"Sometimes we could have played a bit more direct but we know that we can improve because we need to create a bit more.

"To come away with one point is not enough, we wanted to win but we're going to take it and try to win the next game."

The draw leaves both teams with four points from their first three group games.
