Memphis Depay will be a success for Man United - Ronald Koeman

Memphis Depay will find his form to be a success for Manchester United, according to former PSV Eindhoven boss Ronald Koeman.

Koeman, now in charge at Southampton, was at PSV when Depay was signed from Sparta Rotterdam as a 12-year-old in 2006.

Depay, 21, joined United for a reported fee of £25 million in the summer but has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League after playing a crucial role in PSV's Eredivisie title success last season with 28 goals in 40 games in all competitions.

Depay has contributed just one goal in the Premier League this season, though he has netted three times in the Champions League.

He was dropped by manager Louis van Gaal for United's 3-0 victory at Everton, partly due to Netherlands' failure to make the playoffs for Euro 2016 last week.

But Koeman, who revealed he tried to take him to St Mary's a year ago and would be interested again, is confident the player will go on to prove his worth in England.

Koeman told a BBC Solent fans forum event, as reported by the Daily Mirror: "It is true, we were interested in Memphis Depay last year but we heard from his management that he wanted to stay one more year in Holland and then take the opportunity to play for a foreign club.

"I think Memphis Depay, now at the moment, has a difficult time but that's normal because he is 21 and of course maybe the step to Manchester United in all aspects is a difficult one and he needs more time.

"If one day he will be on the market, I'm interested yes but I don't think so because I believe in that player.

"It is a difficult time but [he is] still young. He has to improve a lot and he will go through all these difficult moments."
