Man United's Martial needs Fellaini and Schneiderlin as interpreters - Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal has revealed that Morgan Schneiderlin and Marouane Fellaini are serving for interpreters for Anthony Martial as Manchester United's manager and top scorer struggle to communicate with each other.

Martial, 19, has had an immediate impact at Old Trafford since United paid Monaco £36 million to make him the most expensive teenager in the history of football.

The France international scored on his Premier League debut against Liverpool on Sept. 12 and then added a brace in the 3-2 victory at Southampton on Sunday to send United second in the table.

But while Van Gaal speaks English, German and Spanish as well as his native Dutch, his French is limited and he needs the assistance of Les Bleus midfielder Schneiderlin and Belgium international Fellaini to talk to Martial.

"He cannot speak English, so I have to speak French with him and I need help with that from Fellaini and Schneiderlin," Van Gaal said in a news conference. "It is very difficult but he is willing to learn English so it is a matter of time, I think.

"When he speaks English well enough, he shall answer the questions himself. But first he has to learn English and adapt to the English culture."

Van Gaal has praised the deadline-day signing for his impressive form, saying: "I have to say that he is doing great. He's played three matches in a row and scored three goals. It is one for one, so that is not bad."

Van Gaal has warned that, despite Martial's terrific start, emerging players can have peaks and troughs in their form.

"He has the talent for it, that I have said, but when you are 19 years old you cannot expect consistency," he added. "Mostly, he shall have a lot of dips so that I expect also from him.

"But that is not a big problem for me. I am very happy with what he gave in three matches and the talent at a high level. And he has adapted to the system that we want, which is also important.

"Not every player can adapt to the system but he shows that he wants to do that and it is not so easy."

Van Gaal also said Phil Jones is on track to return against Sunderland on Saturday after missing a month of action with a blood clot in his calf.

"I said last week that he was ready to train," Van Gaal said. "And Friday was his first training session with the group. It's nearly done, but he's not match fit yet. It's very early."
