Manchester United face fight over young star Venancio da Silva Monteiro

Young Manchester United star Venancio da Silva Monteiro is interesting his former club Benfica, his father has told ESPN FC.

Monteiro joined United after leaving Benfica in December, with United beating Manchester rivals City to the highly-rated 16-year-old's signature.

The winger linked up with United for training in April 2014 after his parents moved to England and City tried to bring him to the Etihad Stadium.

However, United were able to keep him and he has since impressed for their youth sides.

Monteiro was rewarded for his progress with a call-up to the Portugal under-17 squad earlier this month, but United have yet to secure him on a scholarship deal.

That has alerted Benfica, who are keen to bring the player back to the Estadio da Luz.

His father, Antonio Monteiro, said he was waiting for United to offer a scholarship deal but said his son was in no rush to make a decision about his long-term future.

"Venancio is very happy at United, but they have yet to offer him a scholarship or pro deal," he told ESPN FC. "It is flattering that other clubs are interested.

"I believe Benfica are keen to bring him back to the club, but we will wait to see what happens at United.

"We all want the best for Venancio so that he can continue his development and hopefully become a star in the future."
