Ashley Young happy to play up front for Manchester United if needed

Ashley Young says he is willing to help out Manchester United's striker shortage by operating as a centre-forward.

Louis van Gaal began Saturday's 3-1 win over Liverpool without a specialist striker after Wayne Rooney suffered a hamstring injury last week.

The United captain is again set to sit out Tuesday's Champions League clash at PSV Eindhoven, meaning midfielder Marouane Fellaini could lead the line once more in his absence.

New signing Anthony Martial, who scored as a substitute on his debut against Liverpool, is another option, but winger Young, who had been used as a striker at times while at Aston Villa, has volunteered to step in if required.

"If the manager wants me to play there then, yes, of course I would," he told reporters.

"I can play in lots of positions and I have done that under the manager, whether it is up front or in midfield. Hopefully I can play there [through the middle], but it's up to the manager and he has to make those decisions."

United allowed strikers Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez to leave in the summer, and Van Gaal has not namechecked Young as one of the players who could operate in attack. However, the 30-year-old says he is being considered by the Dutchman.

"He has said it to me before, but it is down to him," Young said. "He has that headache of picking the team, so rather him than me."

Young impressed as a substitute against Liverpool and hopes it will get him back into the team after a spell among the replacements.

"It has [been a while] and every player in the squad wants to be in the starting XI and I am no different," he said.

"I want to play as much as I can, but when I am called from the bench as I was against Liverpool, I just want to show the manager that I am ready and willing to give 100 percent."

United return to the Champions League group stages on Tuesday after not competing in Europe last season, and Young added: "I did miss it and I don't think there is a player in the squad who didn't miss it.

"It was disappointing not to be in it, but that is in the past now and we are looking forward to the game on Tuesday and hopefully also getting back to winning ways in the Champions League.

"It's the biggest and best competition, so of course I watched the games when they were on last season, but that disappointment of not being in it, not being involved, was always in the back of your mind."
