Sir Alex Ferguson is best manager of all time - Man United's Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has moved to repair his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson by describing the former Manchester United boss as football's greatest ever manager.

Ferguson omitted Rooney at the end of his United reign in 2013 and claimed the striker had asked to leave Old Trafford.

The 73-year-old, who signed Rooney from Everton in 2004, also criticised the England captain in his autobiography

However, Ferguson, who won 13 league titles and two Champions Leagues as United manager, praised Rooney before he equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring record of 49 against San Marino on Saturday, and the forward has now played down their clashes.

"I don't know if anyone knows how things ended [between us]," Rooney told national newspapers

"We had differences [of opinion]. That's normal. Ask Roy [Hodgson, the England manager] -- he's had differences with other players. That's part of football. I'm not the only person who had differences with Sir Alex Ferguson, but I can still sit here and say he was the greatest manager of all time.

"I still see Sir Alex quite a bit at games and he travels away to European games with us. It's not that we don't like each other. We just had differences. That's normal."

After Ferguson retired as United manager, his successor, David Moyes, refused to sell Rooney to Chelsea and Louis van Gaal appointed him captain in 2014.
