Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez must cope with Man United pressure - LVG

Louis van Gaal has told Javier Hernandez he has to prove he has the mental strength to play for Manchester United after his difficult display against Club Brugge.

The Mexican, who has returned to Old Trafford after a year on loan at Real Madrid, missed a penalty and then an open goal during a cameo in United's 4-0 win in Belgium on Wednesday.

And Van Gaal admits that it means Hernandez will be criticised but said captain Wayne Rooney, who scored three goals that night after he came under scrutiny for a slow start to the season, should be a role model.

"You can say everything," he said in a news conference on Wednesday. "Every player that plays for Manchester United has to cope with that pressure. Every player for Manchester United has to. It is like you have written down [off] Wayne Rooney into the ground and now he has scored three goals and he is again god."

Van Gaal said he understood why Rooney, who had already scored a hat trick, allowed Hernandez to take a spot kick, as he praised the Englishman for his unselfishness.

"I am not surprised because he is a social guy," he added. "It is unbelievable. He is a real captain. But we cannot do it at 0-0 but at 4-0, it was a great gesture."
