Louis van Gaal unhappy at Wayne Rooney's disallowed goal vs. Newcastle

MANCHESTER -- Louis van Gaal claimed Manchester United do not need to sign a striker after they were held to a goalless draw by Newcastle and instead complained that Wayne Rooney had a goal disallowed.

The United captain is yet to open his account for the season and his side have only mustered two goals, one of them an own goal, in their opening three Premier League matches.

But Van Gaal criticised referee Craig Pawson for chalking off a third-minute Rooney strike when he was deemed offside in the stalemate with the Magpies.

"Wayne scored," said Van Gaal in a news conference. "Only it was not allowed."

Van Gaal believes technology is needed to help officials in such situations, explaining: "When you see the television, it is very doubtful so you need eyes.

"It is doubtful and the rules are that when it is doubtful then do not flag. But it is also football and I have said already many times you need more equipment to help the referees and linesmen because it is not easy."

Adnan Januzaj is the only United player with a Premier League goal to his name this season but Van Gaal was satisfied with the performance after United struck the woodwork and had eight shots on target.

And he claimed it proves they do not need another centre-forward in the transfer window.

"Because we were three times the best team [in the league this season]," he added. "My worries is that we have to dominate the opponent.

"We did it today, we did it against Aston Villa and against Tottenham, against Tottenham was less but against Villa, Brugge and today we dominate. In the United States [in preseason], we dominated against Barcelona, Club America and San Jose. It was only against Paris Saint-Germain we didn't."

United have been linked with Barcelona winger Neymar but Van Gaal refused to comment.

"I don't enter in these discussions," he said. "You can ask about all the players in the world and you are doing that every press conference and I always say the same, I have to protect the interests of Manchester United, the players in my selection and the people in my organisation. You can mention every player but I cannot answer these questions."
