Manchester United's Matteo Darmian adjusting to 'physical' Premier League

Manchester United right-back Matteo Darmian admits he still has to get used to the Premier League and a "more physical" brand of football.

Darmian, 25, has impressed in his first few appearances for United after joining the club from Torino this summer.

"The rhythm's a lot higher in games here," he told Tuttosport. "You get shoved around a lot more and physical contact gets punished far less than in Italy, with the game interrupted far less.

"It's less tactical here too. Each team just play their own game, and play to win."

Darmian said he did not have to think twice about moving to United this summer, once he learnt of their interest.

He had been linked with a move to Bayern Munich before the Red Devils got in touch with Torino, who had promised him he would be allowed to leave this summer after blocking a move 12 months earlier.

"When they called, I didn't have to think for a second," he said. "It's impossible to turn down a club as important as this. I'm delighted to have decided to make this move abroad."

The Italy international also spoke about how he is settling in Manchester, adding: "I'm still living in a hotel right now, but I'm looking for my own place.

"I'm improving my English too bit by bit. Certainly it's been positive, with both my debuts [in the Premier League and Champions League]. It was a great emotion each time."

It was an emotion of a different kind for Darmian to leave Turin. He made his name in four spectacular seasons with the Granata, and will never forget his time spent in Piedmont.

"I watched their game in the Coppa Italia against Pescara the other day," he said. "I'm still in contact with my former teammates and I like following them."

He would also like to give them back some pleasure by beating Juventus in the Champions League. "But first, we've got to qualify," he said.
