David De Gea could face Barcelona in Manchester United friendly

Manchester United are optimistic that David De Gea will be fit to face Barcelona on Saturday.

The goalkeeper has sat out United's friendly wins over Club America and San Jose Earthquakes with a minor injury, which manager Louis van Gaal has said is not serious.

But he was pictured warming up before the 3-1 victory over San Jose and manager Louis van Gaal said in his news conference afterwards that De Gea had played a limited part in a training session.

"I have a good hope that he can play against Barcelona but he was still injured [for the San Jose match]," Van Gaal said in his news conference.

"[Fellow goalkeeper Anders] Lindegaard was also injured so it was difficult. I told David to go stand in the goal so we have a point of direction for my attackers, but don't do anything to risk more injury because we have to build you up. I hope that he can play and I think he can."

Lindegaard and Sam Johnstone are the other two goalkeepers in Van Gaal's squad after Victor Valdes was left behind in Manchester and the manager said he would sell the former Barcelona player, accusing him of refusing to play for United's reserves.

Real Madrid target De Gea seems likelier to stay at United for the final year of his contract after the 2014 Champions League winners signed Kiko Casilla after Iker Casillas left.

United were adamant they would not sell De Gea unless they received a world-record fee for a goalkeeper, topping the £32.6 million Juventus received for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

Right-back Antonio Valencia has also missed United's first two preseason games and Van Gaal is yet to say if the Ecuadorian is in contention to take on Barcelona.

The Dutchman has swapped all 10 outfield players at half-time in both games so far and only four of the 26 players in the United squad are yet to get any game time.

Besides De Gea and Valencia, the others are youngster Sean Goss and midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who is suspended for the first three games of the Premier League season after he was sent off against Hull in May.
