Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal praises 'professional' David De Gea

MANCHESTER: Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is confident David De Gea will have the right approach on the club's preseason tour, despite the uncertainty caused by Real Madrid's attempts to sign the goalkeeper.

The 10-time European champions are interested in buying Spain international De Gea but are yet to meet United's asking price of a world-record fee for a goalkeeper, topping the £32.6 million Juventus received for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

United are vowing to keep De Gea for the remaining year of his contract -- with the 24-year-old having opted not to sign a lucrative extension -- if their valuation is not met.

But while Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has reportedly said he does not want to go on the Merseysiders' preseason tour as he attempts to force a move away, Van Gaal has no qualms about taking De Gea to the United States on Monday.

"He is a very professional player and he has showed fantastic attitude until now," the United boss told a news conference.

"I think that all my players behave themselves very professionally. That is the difficulty now for every manager. This period when players have to go [to another club] or not have to go is the most difficult time. I cannot complain about the professional attitude of my players."

United face Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain on their trip to the United States.

Van Gaal has made one summer signing so far, bringing in PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay for £25 million, but is on the brink of another and confirmed that Torino right-back Matteo Darmian is set to have a medical at Old Trafford.

But he said: "Buying and selling is a process and we are in the middle of a process that lasts until Sep.1.

"I find it ridiculous that the transfer period is so long and so late, but it is like that. We cannot say anything about our transfers, our strategy because otherwise our opponents can take profit from it."
