Louis van Gaal: Man United need signings for Premier League title

Louis van Gaal has said Manchester United's hopes of competing for the Premier League title next season rest on how they perform in the summer transfer window.

United finished fourth in Van Gaal's debut campaign in charge at Old Trafford, securing the club's return to the Champions League.

Netherlands international Memphis Depay has already agreed to sign for United from PSV Eindhoven ahead of the 2015-16 season, and Van Gaal is hopeful of further arrivals.

"I'm afraid that the board of Manchester United shall say, 'Now we have to battle for the championship,'" he said in The Times. "It is a fantastic challenge but that is dependable on how we can purchase very good players and how we can improve the balance in our selection.

"The balance in our selection was not good [this season]. In every position you need two players who can play and then you can change more easily and they can perform better, how you want them to perform."

United have this week been linked with Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, although the Liga club have said they will have to pay at least €50 million for his signature.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Barcelona right-back Dani Alves, Bayern Munich central defender Dante and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
