Van Gaal coy on Van Persie's man United future: 'Have to wait and see'

Robin van Persie's future was cast into doubt as Louis van Gaal refused to say if the striker will be at Manchester United next season.

The former Arsenal captain, who skippered Van Gaal's Holland team as they finished third in last summer's World Cup, is out of contract in 2016 and is yet to be offered a new deal.

He has only started once since suffering an ankle injury at Swansea in February and has been displaced by Wayne Rooney as United's first-choice striker.

And while United are likely to lose one forward, as Radamel Falcao's loan spell ends, Van Gaal did not guarantee his fellow Dutchman will be at Old Trafford again.

He is poised to hold talks with several players about their futures on Sunday and Monday and was reluctant to divulge what he will say to Van Persie.

"You have to wait and see," he added. "I shall not say whom I am speaking to."

Van Persie, who has only scored 10 goals in 29 games this season, has endured the least prolific of his three seasons at the club.

Van Gaal later said the highlights of his first season at Old Trafford were the spring wins over Liverpool and Manchester City, although he deemed the 3-0 victory over Tottenham the best performance.

The lowest points he selected were the 5-3 defeat at Leicester in September and the 3-0 loss to Everton in April.

"The worst moment is the game against Leicester City and the referee was playing a part," he explained. "And Everton away where the referee played a part."
