Chris Smalling backs Man United winger Ashley Young for England recall

Chris Smalling has tipped his Manchester United teammate Ashley Young for an England recall, and believes the national team could benefit from selecting the in-form winger.

Young, 29, has not represented his country since September 2013 but has returned to form and favour at Old Trafford under manager Louis van Gaal this season.

Sources have told ESPN FC the United midfielder is in talks about extending his contract and defender Smalling, who is a member of Roy Hodgson's England squad, feels he must be in contention for an international recall.

"With his performances people will always be looking in terms of England," Smalling told national newspapers. "He was terrific. Every time he got it he looked like he was going to beat his man.

"I think it's the unpredictability he's got. I think England could always do with a player like that and he's been there before and I'm sure he won't be far off.

"He's quick and he can go both ways. He can cut in and have a shot or he can get past and put a cross in with his other foot.

"He's been a real threat the last few weeks. It could be a confidence thing and the manager showing faith in him. When you've got that you just build on it."

Young has won 30 caps for England and was a member of their first-choice team during Euro 2012 and, after excelling in United's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, reiterated his determination to play for his country again.

The former Aston Villa player said: "I've always said I'd love to come back into contention for England. But I've just got to keep playing well. This was one of my best games."
