Ashley Young in Manchester United contract talks - sources

Manchester United have opened talks with Ashley Young about a new contract, sources have told ESPN FC.

Young, 29, sees his current deal expire in 2016 and United have moved to keep the England international at Old Trafford.

No announcement is expected imminently, with Young, who is keen to stay at the club, relaxed about the situation as he waits to agree terms.

Young has emerged as a pivotal player under United manager Louis van Gaal and has kept the British record signing Angel Di Maria out of the team in recent weeks.

The former Aston Villa player, who has been used at left-back, wing-back and on the left wing, has made 20 Premier League starts and has begun their last 10 games in all competitions.

United have moved to try and tie down key players who were due to be out of contract in 2016 to extended deals.

Centre-back Chris Smalling has committed his future to the club until 2019 while Van Gaal said goalkeeper David De Gea has been made a lucrative offer.

Defender Phil Jones, another of Van Gaal's first-choice team, is also out of contract in 13 months' time, along with strikers Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez and right-back Rafael da Silva.

Vice-captain Michael Carrick, who would have been out of contract this summer, was given a one-year extension while youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair have also been rewarded with new deals.

Young joined United for £17 million from Villa in 2011 and has gone on to make 112 appearances, scoring 13 goals.
