Di Maria expected to stay at Man United, but decision is his - Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal expects Angel Di Maria to stay at Manchester United next season but admits it is up to the club's record signing whether he remains at Old Trafford.

The United manager conceded the most expensive signing in the history of British football has endured a difficult debut year.

Di Maria has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, but even though he has lost his place in the team and has not scored a league goal since October, Van Gaal is happy to keep the £59.7 million signing.

"I think Di Maria shall stay," the United manager said. "Also, the manager and the club is always dependable on the opinion of the player himself, the player decides, we shall see what he decides.

"He is working very hard. I am pleased with his attitude, so that is not a problem. He cannot say that he has had a marvellous season here, he cannot say that. The decision is not only to him because now we have a contract, so we shall speak always with every player, evaluation, as I always do. Then we speak with each other about the future, and that is with every player."

Di Maria has not started since he was sent off against Arsenal in March and Van Gaal said it was hard to incorporate the Champions League winner after United found form against Tottenham when he was suspended.

"Normally Di Maria should have played, but the last weeks he doesn't play anymore and the team is winning," he added.

United have lost their last two games, to Chelsea and Everton, and Van Gaal suggested Di Maria could earn a recall for the home game against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

"Now, we are losing, so the chance of him coming back is higher," he added. "It is never that it is not like that. The issue that he is not always in the lineup is also for him a disappointment, but for me a disappointment."

Van Gaal admitted left-back Luke Shaw could be out for the season with a groin injury, adding: "I don't know because it is a groin injury."
