Louis van Gaal: I can make Wayne Rooney even better for Man United

Wayne Rooney is setting an example at Manchester United, according to Louis van Gaal, but the Dutch coach believes he can make his captain an even better player.

Rooney, 29, has scored 11 goals in 16 games this season after being made skipper for both club and country, and he struck in United's 3-0 victory over Hull on Saturday for his fifth in four matches.

With Radamel Falcao fit and pushing for playing time and Robin van Persie struggling for form in recent weeks, Van Gaal says that Rooney is always assured of a starting role unless he hits a "bad moment" -- though the former Netherlands boss insists he can develop the striker's game further.

"Before I came here, of course, I had heard of his reputation," Van Gaal said. "But, from the first day, he was not the Wayne Rooney that people had talked about.

"He was, in my eyes, a great example in training and, of course, he has achieved a certain level. I think he shall always play with me -- although, when he is in a bad moment, maybe I can be convinced to change him.

"But he is my captain now. He is the men who sets the example for the other players. So I'm very pleased. I have the impression that he lives for football and that he likes being the captain of Manchester United.

"Of course, being captain of England helps him to be a better captain of United. He has more experience. But I have to remind everyone that I put him first as captain. Roy Hodgson followed my advice."

He added: "I can make every player better. I'm sorry. That's arrogant, but I can."

United's victory over Hull at Old Trafford leaves them fourth in the table on 22 points from 13 games -- 11 points off league leaders Chelsea.
