Louis van Gaal: Man Utd have to improve to seal top four spot

Louis van Gaal has called on Manchester United to be more clinical to ensure they qualify for the Champions League.

United returned to the top four with a 2-1 win at Arsenal last week, which was their first away victory under Van Gaal. But United have only won one game -- September's 4-0 thrashing of QPR -- by more than a single goal this season and manager Van Gaal wants them to record more comprehensive victories.

"We have to improve our playing style and beat opponents more easily," he told a news conference.

The former Premier League champions only came seventh last season and Van Gaal has been charged with taking them back into Europe's major club competition.

And while he is satisfied with their current league position, he is more concerned about the end-of-season table.

He added: "We are still fourth so I am happy, but we have to be at least fourth at the end of the season, not now."

United host Hull on Saturday as they welcome their former captain Steve Bruce, who is now in charge of City, back to Old Trafford.

Bruce made more than 400 appearances during nine years at Old Trafford and helped them win their first three Premier League titles. And Van Gaal felt the former centre-back showed his potential to become a manager then.

He explained: "I saw him playing for Manchester United. He was very firm, I think. He was also a leader. Most players who are leaders become managers, and he is one."
