Paddy McNair reflects on 'crazy' rise to prominence for Manchester United

Paddy McNair reflected on a "crazy couple of months" as he struggles to understand his sudden rise to prominence for Manchester United.

McNair, 19, has been thrust into the United team by Louis van Gaal following a defensive injury crisis, and has earned plaudits for the way he has performed in his first four senior appearances.

And the Northern Irishman, who was a midfielder before being converted to centre-back, could make his international debut against Romania after being called up to the national squad.

With Chris Smalling suspended and Marcos Rojo, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones all injured, McNair started in United's 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The defender told MUTV: "It's been a crazy couple of months. I was playing with the under-21s two months ago, then all of a sudden I'm playing in front of 75,000 people at Old Trafford.

"It has happened so fast. Last year I think I played 11 games for the U-21s so hopefully I'll be close to 11 for the first team by the end of the season."

McNair debuted against West Ham in September and then faced Everton before being injured, but made his comeback as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

He added: "When I was growing up, I always wanted to play for Manchester United, and now I am playing in Manchester derbies, so it's been good and I've loved every minute of it."

Northern Ireland are the surprise leaders of Group F after winning their first three Euro 2016 qualifiers and McNair said: "It's a dream come true to be called up. I think the last time they were in a major tournament was 1986, so if I can help them get to France in 2016 that would be great."
