Johan Cruyff slams Manchester United for 'stupidness' over David Moyes

Johan Cruyff has accused Manchester United of making a stupid error by hiring David Moyes as manager.

The Scot, who was chosen by Sir Alex Ferguson, was sacked in April, less than 10 months into a six-year contract at Old Trafford and replaced by Cruyff's old rival Louis van Gaal, who he thinks will do much better.

Cruyff, who played in the 1974 World Cup final for Netherlands and won four La Liga titles and the Champions League in his days as Barcelona manager, was quick to praise Moyes, who he believes did an excellent job during his 11 years in charge of Everton.

But he is adamant that he was the wrong choice for United and said the club should shoulder the blame.

"Manchester paid for their stupidness [stupidity] and now they have got to recover," Cruyff told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Moyes is a very good coach because I've seen [it for] many, many years in Everton.

"But he's not a coach which should fit with Manchester United because the focus for both teams are totally different.

"That's why the biggest mistake is to ask Moyes to come to Manchester United because it's a totally different team, a totally different mentality.

"The basic mistake was to sign him on. I think he is a great manager but not for Manchester United. He's just a great manager for another type of team."
