Transfer Rater: Jan Oblak to Liverpool

Football Whispers

Cleverley confident under Van Gaal

DENVER -- Manchester United's Tom Cleverley is confident he can rediscover his best form under Louis van Gaal.

The midfielder started just 18 Premier League games last season and missed out on England's World Cup squad, but he believes that a summer of rest and the arrival of the veteran Dutch coach can be a boost for his career.

"I managed to have a good break and recharged the batteries, and it's definitely an exciting time under a new manager who we're all trying to impress. And we definitely see it as a fresh start," Cleverley said on Friday.

Cleverley was an unused substitute in three of Man United's final five games last season.

Van Gaal revealed that Cleverley will be one of two players who will play the entire game -- Tyler Blackett is the other -- when United meet Roma at Sports Authority Field on Saturday, and the 24-year-old is relishing the opportunity to impress his new boss.

"I think I can be his type of player. I have to show that in training and, most importantly, in the games, but I think there's a place for me, but I have to prove that.

Cleverley said Van Gaal has made quite clear his ideas and coaching philosophy.

"We play a passing and moving style, and that's what the manager wants. I don't think there can be any problems when he is so clear what he wants, and everything is going smoothly so far."
