Phil Jones confident of United revival

Phil Jones admitted that Manchester United let themselves down in Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool but believes Wednesday’s win against Olympiakos shows they have the unity to mount a revival.

• Okwonga: Moyes' men deliver
• Payne: Something to shout about
• Brewin: Time is on Moyes' side

The defending champions are only seventh in the Premier League but made it into the last eight of the Champions League by defeating Olympiakos 3-0 to overcome their 2-0 first-leg deficit.

And while there have been reports that some of the United players are unhappy under David Moyes’ management, Jones believes they are all fighting together as they bid to turn around their season.

He said: “We let ourselves down on Sunday, we know that and hopefully we gave the fans something to smile about.

"We have all had criticism. We’re in it together. We’re a team, the manager and the staff, and we’ve got to band together and come through this difficult period, and we will do.

“It was a huge night. We knew the objective was to go and score three goals and not concede, and we’ve done that. We have to use this as an impetus to go and prove that we can win game after game. Now hopefully we can kick on.”

Jones also praised goalkeeper David de Gea, who made a vital first-half double save before Robin van Persie completed a hat trick to eliminate the Greek champions.

He added: “He is terrific. When you are called up in a game of this magnitude he has to pull off big saves and he has shown tonight why he is world class.”
