Kagawa aims for improvement

Shinji Kagawa is determined to make a bigger impact for Manchester United during his second season at the club.

Shinji Kagawa joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund last summer
Shinji Kagawa scored six goals in 17 Premier League starts for Manchester United in 2012-13.

Kagawa’s debut campaign in English football was interrupted by injury meaning he was unable to regularly recreate the form which had led United to sign him from Borussia Dortmund.

However, the Japan international plans to make amends by upping his game and improving his goal tally.

“It was a tough time for me with a lot going on in my head. I am not happy with my performance for the team at all,” Kagawa said on United’s pre-season tour of Japan.

“I didn't score that much and I also had my injury. It was great we won the league. I just don't feel that I achieved everything that I wanted. For me personally, it wasn't a good season.”

Key to an improved season for Kagawa will be his relationship with United boss David Moyes, something he is looking forward to.

“I have met the manager for the first time and we had a talk in the car on the way here,” Kagawa said. “We still need to spend more time together to get to know each other. I am looking forward to building a relationship with him.”

Kagawa is looking forward to facing former Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura when United play Yokohama F Marinos on Tuesday and has ambitions of emulation his global status.

“Nakamura is a very big global player and I am happy to be on the same pitch as him,” Kagawa said.

“I would like to become the same global player one day. I will do my best for the team then hopefully it can happen.”
