Manchester City's Kompany set for one-year deal on lower wages - sources

Vincent Kompany is set to earn a new one-year contract extension at Manchester City, sources have told ESPN FC.

The City captain's contract runs out at the end of the season but talks have been ongoing over a new 12-month deal.

Kompany has made just 14 appearances this term and is in his testimonial season, having joined in 2008. The 32-year-old is keen to stay at the club but will have to accept terms on lower wages.

The Belgium international showed his experience by marshalling the defence in the 2-1 victory over title rivals Liverpool which reignited City's Premier League challenge in January. However, Kompany has not featured since that win six weeks ago after limping out of the action in the 88th minute, missing the next 12 matches. He returned to first team training last Sunday ahead of the Champions League round-of-16 first leg away at Bundesliga side Schalke.

Wednesday's match may come too quickly after such a lengthy absence, with Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea a more likely date for a return.

Eliaquim Mangala, who has not played all season after a knee injury suffered on loan at Everton a year ago, has also returned to training.
