Riyad Mahrez ankle injury leaves Pep Guardiola 'concerned'

MIAMI -- Pep Guardiola is unsure whether Manchester City record signing Riyad Mahrez will be fit for the Community Shield after limping out of the International Champions Cup victory over Bayern Munich.

The winger, a £60 million summer signing from Leicester City, hurt his ankle in an early challenge from United States defender Chris Richards and left the pitch in the 26th minute.

His injury is a blow with 14 of City's World Cup players still to return to training, although Guardiola was impressed with his young players who fought back from two goals to beat the Bundesliga champions 3-2 on the night.

"It was his ankle. We will see, maybe it is not a problem," Guardiola told a news conference. "I'm concerned for many things, for injured players, players who are still not here but I am so satisfied for what all of the guys on the tour have done.

"I said in the previous games how proud I was. The result doesn't matter, nothing counts, but the performance was similar to the second game [against Liverpool].

"We analyse our mistakes in the previous games and did it better against Bayern Munich, one of the best teams. We were able to play good and overcome the situation when we were 2-0 down.

"When you see Robben, Coman, Wagner, Ribery and these exceptional players they make a difference but we overcame the situation.

"It will be huge experience for these guys to realise we can play against good teams. We have five or six days until the Community Shield and I don't know which players will be able to play, but I am so satisfied with these games."

City flew back to Manchester Airport following the game and Mahrez was pictured wearing a protective boot.

Defender Aymeric Laporte played his first minutes of preseason after a slight strain, although Leroy Sane was not risked from the bench.

"His physical condition is still not good, he has to train a little bit more, but he is not injured," Guardiola said about the German winger.

With many of the first team players due back on Monday, training will have a familiar look about it. But the Catalan coach hinted that some of the youngsters who have impressed in the United States could remain with the first team.

"I saw many good things," he added. "I will not say names because at that age normally you say names and it will confuse [the situation].

"I'm happy with Phil Foden because he played an outstanding game today. The last game was not his perfect performance but even though Phil didn't play good, he's a fighter, he runs and he never gives up. I like this guy.

"Eric Garcia, for example, played three games against Mane, Salah, Robben, Coman -- it's so complicated. But I'm so satisfied for the intention. We judge intention and intentions were so good."
