Pep Guardiola fined £20,000 by FA for wearing yellow ribbon

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been fined £20,000 for wearing a yellow ribbon in breach of Football Association rules against the displaying of political messages.

The FA charged Guardiola for wearing the ribbon during games, which he dons in a show of support for two members of the Catalan government who were imprisoned in October.

Wearing the ribbon breaches the FA's regulations on kit and advertising, and the City manager was charged last month. The FA twice warned Guardiola before issuing the formal charge.

As well as the fine, Guardiola has been warned about his future conduct.

The City boss explained the ribbon's significance last week and accepted the charge earlier this week. The regulations concern only the technical area, and Guardiola is expected to continue to wear the ribbon for pre- and postmatch activities. He will wear also continue to wear it for Champions League games as it does not breach UEFA rules.

"I said from the beginning that if the FA consider I shouldn't wear the yellow ribbon I would accept it, but the fact that I wear it or not doesn't mean anything because the yellow ribbon is always going to be there, whether you see it or not, even if I wear it in the press conference, postmatch, it doesn't matter," he said on Monday. "The situation doesn't change -- there are still people in prison in an unfair way."

Guardiola had insisted that the ribbon did not mean he was picking a side in the debate of Catalan independence from Spain, saying it was only to protest the imprisonment of Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, whom the manager considers innocent.

"It's not about the right or left. It's not about a political issue," Guardiola said last week. "It's for the people who say it's not right to have four people in jail. It says something for the humanity."

However, FA chief Martin Glenn was adamant the ribbon was a political symbol, though he later apologised for some of his comments after appearing to equate the Star of David with a swastika.

"To be honest, and to be very clear, Pep Guardiola's yellow ribbon is a political symbol, it's a symbol of Catalan independence and I can tell you there are many more Spaniards, non-Catalans, who are p----d off by it," Glenn said. "All we are doing is even-handedly applying the laws of the game."
