Ilkay Gundogan: Manchester City 'more efficient' in front of goal
Ilkay Gundogan insists that improved efficiency in front of goal is the reason for Manchester City's incredible form this season.
City are 16 points clear in the Premier League, having beaten Leicester 5-1 and then watched rivals Manchester United lose 1-0 to Newcastle at the weekend. Their next test is FC Basel in the Champions League as they chase a possible Quadruple, and Gundogan revealed Pep Guardiola's secret for success.
"Everyone is capable of scoring a goal; we've become more efficient in front of the goal," he told Blick.
"He's [Guardiola] been a top player himself, can think in our shoes, can handle different player types, has a clear philosophy on the pitch, and is always capable of turning the right screws.
"He wants attractive football to be played. Already when I was at Dortmund and he coached Bayern, I admired that. Wherever he worked, the overall atmosphere was good. And he improves young players."
Gundogan, who joined City from Dortmund in 2016 for around £20 million, was also asked why he believes the Premier League is better than the German Bundesliga and, with Bayern's 16-point lead at the top, that the English division is more even.
"There's too little happening in Bundesliga," he said. "Most teams look for security, want to avoid mistakes instead of acting.
"Bayern are just Bayern, the club stands for high quality, has stood for it for decades. It will be difficult for another club to overtake them in the next couple of years. In Premier League, on the other hand, there are several top clubs able to win the title. The league's more even."
