Leroy Sane suffered ankle ligament damage in Sunday's FA Cup win, Manchester City have confirmed.

The 22-year-old came off at half-time after being caught Cardiff's Joe Bennett in a shin-high challenge.

City said scans had confirmed the extent of Sane's interview, though the club declined to put a timeline on his recovery. However, Sane wrote on Instagram that he believes he escaped the worst.

"I think it isn't as bad as it looked," he wrote. "My rehab will start soon and I'm motivated to be back on the pitch as soon as possible!"

Pep Guardiola said on Sunday that he expected Sane to be "out for a while," while the Germany FA's official Twitter account also expressed concern that Sane could miss the World Cup.

Sane has provided 11 goals with 14 assists in all competitions this season.
