Police investigate alleged racially aggravated assault on Raheem Sterling

Police are investigating an alleged racially aggravated assault on Manchester City's Raheem Sterling at the club's Etihad Campus.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed in a statement that they have been made aware of an incident at the club's Etihad Campus and are treating it as a "hate crime."

The Daily Telegraph reported that Sterling was allegedly kicked and racially abused as he arrived at the club's training ground on Saturday ahead of their 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Sterling scored twice in the 4-1 victory and manager Pep Guardiola made no mention of the incident in his postmatch news conference. City have so far not commented on the incident.

A statement from GMP said: "On Sunday, 17 December 2017, police were made aware that a 23-year-old man had been subject to a racially aggravated assault on Clayton Lane on Saturday, 16 December.

"While an official report has not yet been made, enquiries will be carried out and officers are treating it as a hate crime.

"Hate crime will not be tolerated in Greater Manchester and can be reported via the True Vision website at report-it.org.uk.

"Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

Kick It Out, football's equality body, said it had been in touch with Sterling to offer him support.

The organisation said in a statement: "Verbal and physical assaults of a racist or discriminatory manner are completely unacceptable across football and society.

"This incident is a racially aggravated hate crime and should not go unchallenged, through reporting to the relevant authorities, otherwise these incidents will encourage others that this behaviour is acceptable."
