Man City appeal the cost of Bacary Sagna's social media fine - reports

Manchester City have appealed against the severity of the £40,000 fine imposed on Bacary Sagna for a social media post, according to multiple reports.

The City defender was this week found guilty of misconduct by the Football Association over comments written on Instagram about referee Lee Mason.

Sagna and the club have not contested the charge but feel the punishment is unduly harsh, Press Association Sport reported.

The 33-year-old posted a photo with with the caption "10 against 12.. but still fighting and winning as a team" following City's hard-fought 2-1 victory over Burnley on Jan.2.

The match at the Etihad Stadium had seen City midfielder Fernandinho sent off.

Sagna later amended the post to read "still fighting and winning as a team."

City reportedly believe this action, plus the Frenchman's previous good character and past precedent involving other players, makes the punishment too severe.

FA fines in such matters usually take into account players' earnings. The FA will set a date for an appeal board hearing after the club have formally submitted their appeal with supporting evidence.

Information from Press Association Sport was used in this report.
