Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany could play in Swansea cup tie

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is set to make his first appearance of the season in the EFL Cup at Swansea City on Wednesday.

City coach Pep Guardiola will make changes for the clash at the Liberty Stadium and has called up a number of youngsters including 17-year-old Spaniard Brahim Diaz.

Belgium international Kompany has not featured for City since he suffered a thigh strain in the Champions League semifinal in May which caused him to miss the European Championship.

He was an unused substitute in the 4-0 victory over Bournemouth at the weekend, with Guardiola determined not to rush him back.

"It was so frustrating for him, for the club, the last two years, his injuries," the City boss told a news conference.

"He has trained a lot and he will be ready and compete with other central defenders to win his position. But we have a lot of games and we need him.

"I'm so happy, the last game was the first time he had been on the bench this season. Today he's travelling with us and tomorrow we will decide his chances to play."

David Silva is still recovering from a minor knock and Guardiola said he would not feature, while forwards Sergio Aguero and Nolito are banned.

Fernando is fit again, while youngsters Tosin Adarabioyo, Aleix Garcia, Pablo Maffeo, Angelino and exciting young forward Brahim will be considered.

Brahim has yet to feature for the first team but has been fast-tracked into the squad after helping City's under-18s reach last season's FA Youth Cup final.

Guardiola said: "It's not just Brahim. There are three or four more players who are now in the second team. We will follow them and if they are ready, we will be ready to count on them and then in the future they can help us."
