Manchester City's Raheem Sterling named August Player of the Month

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling has been named Premier League Player of the Month for August after his impressive start to the season.

Sterling, 21, beat Chelsea's Eden Hazard, Manchester United's Antonio Valencia and Hull City's Curtis Davies to land the prize.

The former Liverpool forward has thrived under Pep Guardiola, scoring two goals, setting up one and winning a penalty to help City make a 100 percent start to the season.

He has started all three of City's victories in the Premier League as well as laying on two goals in the 5-0 Champions League playoff victory over Steaua Bucharest.

It represents a complete turnaround in form after Sterling had struggled for regular starts in the second half of last season.

He was criticised for his performances for England at Euro 2016 but his confidence has been rebuilt since Guardiola told him in a summer phone call that he was a major part of his plans.

Each Premier League captain has a vote on who wins the award, alongside a panel made up of former players and managers.
