Pep Guardiola expects Joe Hart to 'fight' for Manchester City spot

Pep Guardiola expects Joe Hart to fight for his place in Manchester City's team after being dropped for their Premier League game against Sunderland.

Hart, 29, was replaced by Willy Caballero for the game amid speculation that Guardiola plans to replace him with Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

But Guardiola expects Hart and Caballero to compete for a starting place.

He told BT Sport. "They are professionals and are going to fight for their place."

Guardiola handed debuts to new signings John Stones and Nolito and he was happy with the impact of both players.

"John Stones, Nolito, they were all amazing," he said. "We are a team. We fight like a team and they did it. For the new manager, new players, it's important to believe in what we are doing."

It was a close-fought game before City claimed three points thanks to Paddy McNair's own goal, but Guardiola insisted it was a deserved win even if it was a little lucky.

"We definitely deserved the victory," he said. "The first games are always difficult. We spoke during this week about what we had to do like a team and we did it.

"Sometimes, you are little lucky. We should have been a bit more aggressive but these kind of things have to happen to know how to get better in the next game."
