Willy Caballero surprised to replace Joe Hart in Manchester City team

Manchester City goalkeeper Willy Caballero admitted he was surprised to start in goal ahead of Joe Hart for the Premier League game against Sunderland.

After working hard in preseason to earn the position and challenge Hart, the Argentinian was happy to be part of a side that won.

"It was a surprise for me," he told BT Sport. "I trained very well in preseason to have this opportunity.

"I tried to enjoy it today and fortunately we started very well with three points so it is better to improve and make a correction when we win.

"This is a new country, a new club for the boss. We know a lot about the way he wants to play and it is very important to start well and start winning and this is the best way to start."

John Stones made his debut for City having completed a £47.5 million transfer from Everton just days earlier.

The defender was happy to win and happy with the team's performance but believes there is room to improve.

"We've been working hard over the three or four days I've been here," he said. "I thought we brought a lot of good things to the pitch but there's a lot we can work on, with Tuesday coming.

"I'm pleased we got the three points in the end. We were patient with the ball -- that's what the manager wants. Maybe sometimes we could have played a bit quicker but that's football, we decided to keep it."

"I think we had a lot of chances we could have taken that I'm sure we will look to correct and we will be disappointed that we didn't take more goals and deserved the start that we got. We will look back on that and hopefully take more chances in the next games."

Guardiola hailed his new signings and believes his side earned their victory.

"It was tough for everybody and that is why the people says the Premier League is tough, we were constant and we deserved the victory.

"All of [the new signings] were a team so we fight, we spoke many times what we should do like a team, this is just the first step.

"But of course for the new people, new manager, new players to start winning helps to believe in what we are doing."
