Pep Guardiola to give Manchester City youth players chance to impress

Pep Guardiola has opened the door for Manchester City's youngsters after revealing the academy's top talents will have the opportunity to impress in preseason.

Former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss Guardiola has a reputation for bringing through young talent and City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarek said in June that it was of one of the major factors in deciding to bring him to the Etihad.

Despite launching their £200 million, state-of-the-art Etihad Campus in 2014, City have struggled to bring through their own youth players, with only Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho making a significant impact in the first team under previous boss Manuel Pellegrini.

At Barcelona, Guardiola ditched experienced players in favour of the emerging Gerard Pique, Pedro and Sergio Busquets in his first team while youngsters Kingsley Coman and Joshua Kimmich were regular starters at Bayern.

Now City's talented youngsters will get their chance to make their mark with some senior players still to return for preseason after a summer at the Copa America and Euro 2016.

Guardiola told former Oasis guitarist and singer Noel Gallagher in an interview for the club's official website: "When the talent is the talent and you have the quality and enough passion to become something in world football, if they show me something they will be in my hands.

"It depends on the quality of the players. You cannot create something. I'm a good trainer but not good enough to convince the players who don't have the quality that they can play at that level.

"First of all I have to know them. All of the big talents will join us in the preseason and afterwards they have to show me how good they are. Afterwards my intuition will help me decide if they are able or not.

"Sometimes I will be right and maybe I can make a mistake but it depends on them. It depends on their quality.

"But I'm told the academy at Manchester City compared to other places has very, very good talent."

Guardiola met some of his senior players for the first time on Monday as they reported for their first day of preseason training. Among them were captain Vincent Kompany, Samir Nasri, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Fernando, Jesus Navas, Fabian Delph and Iheanacho.

"I think they know I am here 24 hours a day thinking about them," he said. "I love my job and what I do. They have to know and they will realise that I am here just thinking and working for them.

"At the end our job is to convince the other guy that this is the best way to cross the road. Tactics are important, as are training and facilities but in the end it is what I have to do to convince them.

"Maybe with you, we take a beer in the bar and this will convince you and with other ones maybe we talk tactics or with others maybe we don't talk football. It depends on the player."
