Raheem Sterling: I want to become world-class player people say I can be

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling says he must keep working hard to become one of the best players in the world.

Sterling, 21, who joined City in a controversial £49m move from Liverpool in the summer, collected the first medal of his career when Manuel Pellegrini's side won the Capital One Cup in March.

But it's been a mixed season for the club, who have reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time, yet are 15 points off the lead in the Premier League.

Sterling has 12 goals this campaign -- more than any previous season -- but says he must keep improving to reach the level he wants to be at.

"I know I've got a long way to go before I am the player I want to be," Sterling told the Daily Mirror. "I am happy with the way my career has developed so far, but I know there is a lot of work to be done before I can be regarded as the finished article.

"That means listening to my managers and coaches, working hard and looking after myself in the right way.

"I've got my own goals and ambitions. I keep them to myself because I'm not going to put pressure on myself by telling everyone what I'm going to do before I've actually done it.

"But I know that a footballer is judged on his performances and his trophies. I want to become the world-class player that some people say I can be, but that is all down to hard work.

"There isn't a day goes by when I don't look at where I am and what I need to do to improve. The more I do, the more I demand of myself. But there's a lot more to come from me in terms of developing and improving my game."

Sterling might not play again this season for City after picking up a groin injury in the Manchester derby last Sunday.

The injury has also ruled him out of England's friendlies with Germany and the Netherlands, although he is confident he will back for the European Championships this summer.

"I'm disappointed to be injured and obviously it's going to be really difficult missing the Champions League, but I hope to be back as soon as possible and I know I'll be fine for the Euros.

"We want to do the country proud when we get to France. But it takes something very special to win a World Cup or European Championship -- as a lot of England teams have found out over the years."
