Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero targets club's goal record

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has spoken about breaking the club's all-time goal-scoring record amid reports that he is soon to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Aguero, 27, is already on the verge of breaking into City's top 10 most prolific forwards having netted 128 times since joining the club in 2001 , putting him only 50 goals behind current record-holder Eric Brook.

The Manchester Evening News reports that Aguero has been in talks to extend his contract past his current deal, which expires in 2020, and that incoming manager Pep Guardiola is certainly keen to keep the Argentina international as the focal point of his attack.

"It would be a major achievement," Aguero told the club's official website. "I'd rather focus on my next goal rather than the ones I've scored in the past or the ones I might score in the future.

"But breaking the record would be very nice for sure -- they are meant to be broken in the first place. "But if I do it I hope it doesn't last for many years because that would be mean he club can keep growing and have other prolific players."

However, Aguero's sights on the top spot are not just for him, but also for the supporters who have seen him fire them to two Premier League titles.

"I am aware of the affection City supporters have shown for me and I have felt it since day one -- on and off the pitch," he said. "This is a great incentive for me to try to pay that faith back, day by day and game by game.

"As long as I keep trying to do so I'm certain that will mean many good things are to come for all of us in the coming years."
