Vincent Kompany: Man City matched Liverpool's hard-running style

Vincent Kompany has hailed the hard work and belief of his teammates after Manchester City secured their first trophy of the season.

The City captain claimed Liverpool had gone into Sunday's Capital One Cup final at Wembley as slight favourites, after their 4-1 win at the Etihad earlier in the season.

On that occasion, City struggled to contain Liverpool's high-pressing game as Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino tore the Blues defence apart in an emphatic victory.

But it was a different story at Wembley, where City were the better and more creative side, and should have sealed their victory before finally beating Liverpool in a dramatic penalty shootout.

Kompany told reporters: "I'm proud and happy for our fans and for this team as well. I don't think many people thought that we could match a hard-running Liverpool team over the course of 120 minutes and we did more than that. I think we had many chances and many opportunities. I'm just really happy.

"Sometimes it's sad when it happens over penalties but for this club it's massive. In the end we were all just knackered and it had to decided some way. By the end we all accepted it was going to penalties although we still tried.

"We've never played against a club [in a final] that was maybe a little bit favourites before the game so to win this one gives a little boost to everyone."

Man CIty went on to win the league after their last Capital One Cup victory.

Liverpool will get an instant opportunity for revenge when the two sides face each other again in the Premier League, on Wednesday.

Though the Blues have a game in hand, City are now nine points from the top of the table, thanks to leaders Leicester City's late win at the weekend.

However, the last time City won the Capital One Cup in 2014, they went on to win nine of their last 12 games to claim the title on the final day of the season, and they could need a similar run if they are to finish top this year.

Kompany said: "It's turning into a heavyweight brawl. We've got Liverpool again at Anfield on Wednesday. God knows how how everyone will feel -- players will be tired, legs will be tired. But we go at it again and if we manage to win that game then [who knows?]

"We never stopped believing anyway -- we'll go for it as long as we can but Wednesday's going to be a special game.

"Nothing's predictable any more, everyone's tired and it's been a heavy 120 minutes so we'll see what can happen over there."
