Man City's Pellegrini: Belgium ignored Vincent Kompany medical report

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has accused Belgium of ignoring a medical report saying Vincent Kompany was unfit to play for his country, stepping up his criticism of the world's No. 1 ranked international team and their manager Marc Wilmots for picking his captain.

Kompany, 29, had been out for four weeks with a calf injury, and made his comeback by playing for an hour as Belgium beat Israel 3-1 in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Monday.

But Pellegrini said two weeks earlier that the defender "cannot" play for his country after missing the previous five City games, and remained unhappy that Wilmots selected Kompany as he suggested that clubs will have to take action against international teams.

"I was not pleased because we sent Vincent with a medical report that he was not able to play but as the manager of Belgium says, he can do what he wants in the international break," Pellegrini said in a news conference.

"He wanted to use the player and he used him. For me, if a player does not play the last three games for his club, they cannot play for their national squad but there are also rules.

"It is not my duty to do it and I think in some days, club will protest about that."

While Kompany came through the game unscathed, Pellegrini is annoyed that Belgium did not contact him to discuss the situation -- but City have not complained to them.

"No, because the national squad have all the rights to do what they want," he said. "That is what the Belgium manager said, so we cannot do nothing about that.

"[There is] just the suggestion from the medical report that it was not good for Vincent to play. They decide after one week that he can play. Maybe it is better to ring a phone, to make a call."

Pellegrini insisted his issue is not with Kompany -- who had stated he wanted to play for Belgium -- and refused to guarantee that the centre-back will return to the City side when they host Bournemouth on Saturday.

"It was not a problem with him," he added. "It was important for Vincent to work a complete week before he played. He couldn't do it because he played for Belgium so he recovered here Wednesday and Thursday. We will see in the future when he can return to his position."
