Martin Demichelis awarded with Man City's first goal vs. Gladbach

Martin Demichelis has been awarded Manchester City's first goal from their Champions League win over Borussia Monchengladbach after UEFA listened back to the conversation between match officials at the time the ball crossed the line.

Demichelis turned the ball home in the 65th minute as City looked to cancel out Lars Stindl's opener, but it was hooked out from over the line.

As City players were appealing for the goal, Nicolas Otamendi struck the rebound with his shot deflected in by Borussia defender Andreas Christensen. Sergio Aguero later scored a last-minute penalty to win it 2-1.

The events unfolded so quickly that, while it was obviously a goal, it was unclear if the referee was signalling if the first shot had crossed the line, or was awarding the follow-up.

UEFA initially awarded a Christensen own goal but on Thursday changed the attribution, saying the additional assistant referee had signalled Demichelis' effort had crossed the line.

A UEFA statement said: "The referee immediately reported that the goal should have been awarded to Martin Demichelis for his initial attempt on goal -- and that the additional assistant referee had clearly indicated the ball had crossed the line after that shot.

"As it was too late to correct the identity of the scorer at that time, the audio recordings were reviewed this morning and confirmed the statement of the referee regarding the attribution of the goal to Demichelis. UEFA hereby confirms that decision."

UEFA additionally published a transcript from the officials' conversation which left little doubt as to the additional assistant's verdict on Demichelis' shot.

"Goal..Goal-Goal-Goal-Goal-Goal-Goal...Goal" he shouted before being acknowledged by the referee.

The goal is Demichelis' first of the season, and first in the Champions League for City.

The come-from-behind win gives City renewed hope of qualifying from Group D after their opening home loss to Juventus.
