Manchester City chairman backs ex-Barca execs Soriano, Begiristain

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has given chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain a strong endorsement.

The two former Barcelona executives were brought in to oversee City's acceleration towards the European elite after playing significant roles in the Catalan club's past successes.

But after a frustrating season on the field, in which City failed to build on last season's Premier League title win, it was suggested their positions could come under scrutiny.

City's dealings in the transfer market have certainly been underwhelming in the past three years, despite spending more than £200 million.

City also failed to meet European governing body UEFA's Financial Fair Play criteria last year, incurring a fine and a transfer spending cap.

But with the club's development off the field continuing apace - notably with the over-arching City Football Group now also running clubs in New York, Melbourne and Yokohama - Mubarak is convinced the right people are in situ.

Khaldoon told City TV: "It [the business] is working very well. We are on target in our business plan.

"I would say it is one of the areas that I must give credit to Ferran. He has managed the group extremely well. We have a great chief executive in Ferran.

"He understands the business very well, he is a man that understands multiple markets. He knows how to approach this business in an effective way. I would say we are in safe hands.

"One of the things that makes me very comfortable and relaxed is we have, in City, a great organisation with top-notch people that are the best in class in every position.

"We have a great CEO, solid management across the board, we have great coaches, great football directors. It allows me to sit and talk comfortably knowing that most of the burden is carried by professional, top-notch individuals.''

City's American side, New York City entered Major League Soccer this year. City also run A-League club Melbourne City and have a significant stake in J-League outfit Yokohama F Marinos.

Khaldoon is convinced the CFG model is a strong one and is confident all the teams will enjoy success.

He said: "It is very exciting but the key thing is we are doing it in a very interesting way. It is working out very well. Melbourne is a great example. Going into the second year, what you will see is it is going to be impressive growth, impressive development and impressive success.

"New York, it is their inaugural year, the first year in the history, in the life of this club. The club is created by the fans for the fans. There is an incredible relationship that you can see developing between our New York fanbase and this team.

"Even though the team is struggling, and even though the team is having a challenging first season, the loyalty you are starting to see, the commitment you are starting to see by the New York City football team fans is unbelievable.

"Each one of these experiences are different but all of them are progressing. All of them, I guarantee you, are going to be a journey of progress, growth and - above all - success.''
