Manchester City's Aleksandar Kolarov says he would like to return to Italy

Aleksandar Kolarov has suggested that he would like to leave Manchester City to rejoin an Italian club.

The left-back spent three seasons at Lazio before moving to City for £19 million in 2010.

Since then, he has regularly been linked with Serie A clubs, most recently Inter Milan, who are managed by his former City boss Roberto Mancini.

Kolarov told Sky Sport Italia: "I'd like to return to Italy, but it's difficult."

The Serbia international mentioned his former club Lazio and Sampdoria, who are managed by his compatriot Sinisa Mihajlovic.

"I'm happy for Mihajlovic, he's doing very well, as are Lazio," he added. "They're having a great season, and I hope they can end it in third or even second place."

Kolarov signed a three-year contract extension at the Etihad Stadium last summer, committing his future to City until 2017.

But he has only started 10 league games in an injury-hit season as he has failed to replicate his form of the last campaign.

Kolarov, who has scored 15 goals in 161 games for City, has spent the last four seasons competing with Gael Clichy for the left-back spot.
