Manchester City's Frank Lampard closing in on 1,000th appearance

Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard is set to join the prestigious 1,000 club after making the 999th appearance of his career against Barcelona on Wednesday.

Lampard is on the brink of becoming one of the select group of footballers to make 1,000 senior appearances, and could reach the milestone in Saturday's game at home to West Bromwich Albion.

The last British player to reach 1,000 games was Ryan Giggs, whose landmark appearance came for Manchester United against Real Madrid in 2013.

Lampard, who will join New York City FC in the summer after his time at the Etihad Stadium ends, has averaged more than 50 appearances a year since his debut in October 1995, when he made the first of nine appearances in a loan spell at Swansea.

He then returned to his parent club West Ham, for whom he played 187 times, and later moved to Chelsea, becoming their record scorer with 211 goals in 648 games.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge last year, the 36-year-old has played 29 times for City, taking his number of club appearances to 873.

He also played 106 times for England before retiring from international football last summer, earned one England B cap in 1998 and appeared 19 times for the Under-21 team, meaning his overall appearances tally stands at 999.

Lampard, on 296 career goals for club and country, is closing in on another landmark -- he could soon become one of the few midfielders to strike 300 times in his career.
