Manuel Pellegrini: Man City Champions League exit not a failure

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said his side's Champions League exit to Barcelona was not "a failure, but a disappointment" after a 1-0 defeat at the Camp Nou sealed a 3-1 aggregate loss.

Ivan Rakitic scored the only goal of the game, and although Sergio Aguero missed a late penalty the home side should have won by more, with City goalkeeper Joe Hart outstanding.

The defeat leaves City with only the defence of their Premier League title to aim for -- and they are six points adrift of leaders Chelsea -- but Pellegrini said he was not worried about his job.

Speaking at his postmatch press conference, Pellegrini said: "I saw Barca at a very high level, with [Lionel] Messi outstanding. They had chances, but thankfully Joe Hart played very well.

"When Messi gets the ball, he can unbalance the whole pitch. He can run or play good passes. We had to deal with it as well as possible.

"I do not feel it is a failure, but a disappointment. In the last two years, we have reached this round, when in the previous two years we did not.

"We did not have luck in drawing Barca both years. We had some important chances, when we could have changed the tie, but Barca are a better team than us.

"We knew what we had to do -- we had to score two goals. We had to take risks. Fortunately for us, Joe made very good saves, but we also had chances to score.

"Maybe if we scored the penalty something would have changed -- Barca would not play as freely then."

Asked why there were now no Premier League teams left in the Champions League, he said: "It is difficult to explain as it is a very strong league, with very rich clubs and very good players.

"Maybe playing so many games in December and January takes a toll, so we do not reach February as fresh as teams from other leagues.

"We are second in the league, and we will see what happens in the next nine games. "

Pellegrini again stressed that he was not concerned about his future as City boss, adding: "It is always important to win a trophy in the year.

"This year maybe we will not, but in England, of the big clubs, we were the team who reinforced least, spent least money on players.

"At end of the season, we will see what the future is. But I am not worried about it [losing his job]."
