Samir Nasri: Man City must prove class after Champions League progress

Pellegrini: City more than Aguero (1:11)

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes his side deserves more credit after their 2-0 win in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. (1:11)

Samir Nasri has told his Manchester City teammates it is time to prove they are one of the top sides on the planet after they rescued their Champions League dream.

The former France international scored the crucial opening goal as City, who had been bottom of their group, won 2-0 against Roma in Italy on Wednesday to reach the last 16 of the competition.

And while City have never been Champions League quarterfinalists in their history, midfielder Nasri feels they have the quality to trouble anyone.

He told national newspapers: "For me, we have one of the best teams in the world and we just have to show it now. I think, when you go through with all the difficulties we had, it is a miracle, with two points after four games, and you still have a chance to qualify. But we did it and I think we can now go as far as possible."

City won in the Stadio Olimpico without the suspended Yaya Toure and the injured Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany, while David Silva was only fit enough to figure as a substitute.

But Nasri feels they are less likely to prevail with a weakened team in the knockout stages, adding: "We have to be lucky in the draw.

"We have to have all the players fit at the same moment, because at the start of the season we never had the squad fully fit to give headaches to the manager to choose his best XI. When we are able to have all of these players available, we will see how good we are."

Spaniard Silva, who had been out since October with a knee problem, hopes to avoid one of the three teams from his homeland in Monday's draw.

Real Madrid are the defending champions while Atletico Madrid reached last season's final and Barcelona won the competition in 2009 and 2011, and City -- who could also face Monaco, Borussia Dortmund or Porto -- stand a 50 percent chance of drawing a team from La Liga.

"I prefer anyone else other than Real, Barca and Atletico," Silva said. "I don't want any one of them. The later you play a Spanish team, the better. They are all so good that, if you get one, you may as well get one of the others. It would be a difficult draw.

"But every team that gets through now, they are difficult opponents. No matter who we get, we have to be 100 percent, and have to get a little luck too.

"Can we win it? Well, we have to keep getting better. We have come through a very difficult group, a very difficult game and I believe the team was given a lot of life after the victory against Bayern. The team got a lot better, got a lot of confidence and we've got to keep getting better.

"Any team left can win the Champions League. That's why they're here, but it's a long and difficult road."
