Man City captain Vincent Kompany in line to return for Leicester trip

Manchester City are optimistic that captain Vincent Kompany will be fit to make his comeback at Leicester on Saturday.

The centre-back has missed City's last three games with calf and hamstring problems and, although he was in the squad for their 2-0 win at Roma in the Champions League, manager Manuel Pellegrini decided not to gamble on his skipper.

But he thinks the Belgian, who was hurt in the closing minutes of the 3-0 win at Southampton, will be able to return at the King Power Stadium.

"I hope Vincent can be fit for Saturday," Pellegrini said in his news conference. "It was a risk for him to play because he has a problem with his hamstring and his calf. It was better for him and the team not to play."

In Kompany's absence, Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala were paired in the middle of the defence as City kept their first Champions League clean sheet of the season.

Pellegrini will also have to decide whether to recall David Silva to the starting 11 against Leicester after he made his first appearance since October as a replacement in Rome.

City's victory in the Stadio Olimpico took them into the last 16 of the competition for just the second time in their history and midfielder James Milner believes they have the talent to make a major impact in it.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "We will take it step by step but I definitely think the quality is there to go far in this competition. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but the more seasons we play in the Champions League, and the more games we play in it, the experience helps and we get better as a team.

"The pressure was there because we had to win the last couple of games, and we had a couple of injuries, but that shows the quality in the squad, as we managed to get the result we needed.

"This team responds when we need to win games: We did it last year in the Premier League and now we have done it again in the Champions League, by winning these two.

"We had a bit of help from the other game, but to beat Bayern Munich and Roma to qualify, and do it with a number of injuries, shows the amount of quality there is right through the squad."
