Man City waiting on David Silva fitness

MANCHESTER -- David Silva faces a late fitness test as Manchester City wait to see if he will be able to play against West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

Silva, 28, suffered an ankle injury in City’s 3-0 derby win over rivals Manchester United on March 25.

But while he was able to carry on playing for the next three games, manager Manuel Pellegrini said the Spain international could not feature in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland because it came too soon after Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool.

Pellegrini, though, is hopeful that the midfielder will be available for selection when West Brom visit the Etihad Stadium.

“David has a problem in his ankle,” Pellegrini told a news conference. “He played the last games in that condition but it was a game each week. Playing after three days he couldn’t do it today. We will see if he is [fit] on Sunday for Monday. I hope he can play.”

Pellegrini was less concerned about captain Vincent Kompany, who hurt his knee in training on Saturday but went on to face both Liverpool and Sunderland.

“I don’t think Vincent had any problems physically,” he added.

The draw with the Black Cats leaves City six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool and with only one game in hand.

However, Pellegrini is refusing to write off his side’s chances of winning the title just yet.

He said: “My duties now are to talk with the players and try and win these five games and at the end of the season we will see which team has the most points.”
