Pellegrini: Toure the best in the league

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to see Yaya Toure rewarded for his excellence by being crowned PFA Footballer of the Year.

Yaya Toure scored two for Manchester City against West Brom.
Yaya Toure has scored a career-best 21 goals from midfield this season.

Mooney: City flying high
Wenger reveals Toure regret

The Ivorian midfielder is in the most prolific campaign of his career and scored his 21st goal of the season in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Manchester United.

Toure also scored in the Capital One Cup final victory over Sunderland and, as the top-scoring midfielder in the Premier League, is spearheading City's title charge.

And Pellegrini said: "I think he's had a very good season so far, we hope he can continue. Hopefully we win the title and he can be the best player.”

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who has scored 28 times, is the odds-on favourite to win the individual honours.

Pellegrini added: "I don't want to compare [Toure] with anyone -- both of them have had amazing seasons so far. But they must try to finish the season in the same way. And after that it will be the same as the fight for the title."

City go to another title rival, Arsenal, on Saturday with Pellegrini believing that a win for his team could all but end any remaining chances Arsene Wenger's side have of becoming champions.

He added: "It will be very difficult for them. It's difficult for them because they have three teams in front of them. But in football, the mathematics always have a chance of happening. There can be an option."

Wenger brought up 1,000 games in charge of Arsenal last week and Pellegrini believes it is impressive that the Frenchman, who was appointed in 1996, is still in the same job.

He explained: "It's a good way of working -- the best way. Maybe one of the most difficult things for a manager is to stay so many years. It's good for a manager to stay so many years. That's why I have the respect for Arsene Wenger because 17 years in the same club is not easy. I think it's the best way to work."

Pellegrini, who was given the City job at 59, admits it is unlikely he can rival the Arsenal manager's staying power at one club, smiling: "It's a bit late for that now."
